Compare and Contrast:
My hypothesis and John Green’s hypothesis of the benefits and drawbacks of nationalism are quite similar. Regarding the benefits, both of our hypothesis discussed upon how nationalism causes people to unite and resist foreign enemies as John Green discusses about Japan’s nationalism that was spurred by threats from the US. But our hypothesis did not include how independence are won through nationalism, one of the most important aspect of the ideology as it catalyzes great changes in the world, as discussed in John Green’s videos with examples of Canada, New Zealand, and Australia’s independence against Britain, Greek and Macedonians’ independence from the Ottoman Empire, and states who rebelled against Napoleon. Our hypothesis regarding the drawbacks of nationalism are more different, as I focused more upon Nazism and how nationalism can cause discrimination of people because they view themselves as a group of superior people and unite for such causes, while John Green focused on the conflicts nationalism causes such as Japan’s annexation of Okinawa and Hokkaido, as its nature is to resist other states and flower over conflicts. But both our hypothesis include an important point: Nationalism can divide a state with diverse ethnic groups such as the Ottoman Empire. In conclusion, both our hypothesis have many similarities yet a few differences regarding the drawbacks of nationalism.
